The hazelnut market in Croatia showed considerable volatility in volume terms from 2018 to 2023. Starting at 2 049 t in 2018, it grew to 2 226 t in 2019 and surged to a peak of 3 466 t in 2020. The following year saw a sharp contraction to 1 956 t, before a partial recovery to 2 871 t in 2022 and a slight decrease to 2 568 t in 2023.

In value terms, the market followed a similar pattern but with some differences. The market value stood at 11 994 thousand USD in 2018, dipped to 11 163 thousand USD in 2019, then jumped to 15 708 thousand USD in 2020. After falling to 9 443 thousand USD in 2021, it gradually recovered to 10 743 thousand USD in 2022 and reached 11 168 thousand USD in 2023.

Croatia's hazelnut production grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 3 040 tonnes of hazelnuts, marking a 55.1% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 98.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 25.6%.

In 2020, the value of hazelnut output in Croatia reached 12 128 thousand US dollars, which is 40.2% higher than in 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value increased by 40%, with an average annual growth rate of 11.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 8 652 thousand US dollars, while the largest decline occurred that same year, at 12.6%.

Exports hazelnuts from Croatia

Exports in kind, t

After two years of growth, Croatia's hazelnut exports declined. In 2020, the country exported 223.5 tonnes of hazelnuts, a 49.0% decrease compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 21.7%, equating to an average annual decline of 7.8%. The peak was recorded in 2019 at 438.2 tonnes, with the largest increase also occurring that year at 52.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, Slovenia, and Serbia were the leading destinations for Croatia's hazelnut exports in volume terms. Italy accounted for 50.7% of exports, Slovenia for 23.2%, and Serbia for 9.5%, together making up 83.4% of total export flows.

Following two years of increase, Croatia's hazelnut export value declined. In 2020, exports totaled 892 thousand US dollars, showing a sharp drop of 53.9% relative to the prior year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value decreased by 44.7%, with an average annual decline of 17.9%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 935 thousand US dollars, and the largest increase also occurred that year at 18.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Slovenia, Italy, and Serbia remained the principal buyers of Croatian hazelnuts in value terms. Slovenia accounted for 33.8% of exports, Italy for 26.7%, and Serbia for 12.1%, jointly representing 72.5% of total export value.

Imports hazelnuts to Croatia

After two years of gains, Croatia's hazelnut import volume declined. In 2020, the country imported approximately 649.3 tonnes of hazelnuts, which is 7.8% less than in 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 29%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.9%. The maximum volume was recorded in 2019 at 704.0 tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 18.5%.
