The market for horse, donkey and mule meat in Northern Africa began the 2018-2023 period with stable volume at 2 771 t, maintaining this level through 2019. A gradual downward trend emerged after 2019, with the market size decreasing to 2 726 t in 2020 and then to 2 553 t in 2021.

The contraction continued at a slower pace in 2022, reaching 2 540 t, before accelerating significantly in 2023 with volume falling to 2 286 t. This represented the steepest annual decline in the observed period.

Domestic production followed a similar downward path, falling from 2 774 t to 2 419 t, while the complete absence of imports meant the regional market was wholly supplied by local output throughout these years.
