Earlier Report Observations

The market for chicken meat and offal in Vietnam entered a phase of rapid expansion from 2018, initially fueled by a sharp increase in the domestic poultry flock. This growth in supply was met with rising demand after African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks in 2019 caused consumers to switch from pork to poultry, significantly boosting domestic consumption. Concurrently, the 2018 Livestock Law restricted farming in urban areas, prompting a geographical shift of production to other regions without stifling overall output.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021 disrupted supply chains and raised feed costs, leading to higher food prices. However, the fundamental demand shift from ASF persisted, supporting continued market growth. Although movement restrictions caused some smallholders to cease restocking, the overall national flock continued to expand annually, maintaining production growth despite logistical challenges and a competitive environment from sustained imports of lower-priced frozen chicken.

In the following years, the market continued to grow despite persistent pressure from cheap imports, which kept domestic prices under pressure. Authorities proposed stricter technical regulations to control imports of live and frozen chicken. Notably, the industry reached a milestone as major companies began exporting processed chicken to new markets like Japan in 2024, supported by government efforts to enhance food safety standards for export opportunities.
