Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, the market volume for horse, donkey and mule meat in Uzbekistan reached 7 119 t, supported by a growth in the horse population to about 260 thousand head. The market then contracted by 21% to 5 638 t in 2019, a period marked by rising meat prices following reduced imports of live cattle and sheep. Recovery came in 2020 as volume increased to 6 045 t, driven by higher demand after the easing of quarantine measures and the reopening of food service establishments.

The market stabilized at 6 057 t in 2021, a year in which the horse population continued to expand. A 10% decline to 5 433 t occurred in 2022 alongside a general rise in meat prices, including for horse meat. By 2023, volume rebounded to 5 871 t, a period that also saw horse meat production in neighboring Kazakhstan reach 80.2 thousand t and regional prices edge upward.

In 2024, the government adopted a decree to support poultry farming, introducing customs duty benefits for imports of poultry meat and offal, a measure that could influence the competitive dynamics across the broader meat market.
