Earlier Report Observations

From 2018, the Angolan government identified honey as a product with competitive potential and launched the National Development Plan (PDN 2018-2022) to improve the business environment and support domestic production. This was reinforced in 2019 by regulations prioritizing the purchase of national goods, which favored local honey, and by the expansion of the Mel supermarket chain in Luanda, strengthening distribution channels. In 2020, the approval of the National Environmental Quality Plan and strengthened environmental legislation introduced licensing requirements for new productive activities, potentially affecting apicultural practices. Despite these initiatives, the total honey market volume remained stable at around 23 500 t throughout the period.

The sector saw the entry of new players starting in 2021 with the founding of Luso, a company producing and selling about 24 t of honey per year from Moxico province, which began installing industrial beehives for semi-industrial production. In 2022, a memorandum of understanding between the Greenfield venture fund and Kapata Ltd. aimed to further increase honey production in Moxico. Continued government support through decrees promoting sustainable agriculture and organic statutes for the agriculture and environment ministries provided a framework for growth. These efforts contributed to a reported 122.4% increase in commercial honey production in 2023, reaching 107 t, while the overall market volume showed minor fluctuations.
