Earlier Report Observations

The honey market in Mozambique contracted significantly from 1 102.2 t in 2018 to 614.6 t in 2023. This decline was driven by a sharp, sustained drop in imports, which fell from 521.7 t to 36.5 t over the period, while domestic production remained stable, increasing only slightly from 580.6 t to 596.8 t.

The relative stability in local output contrasted with volatile import levels, which caused the overall market volume to fluctuate before settling at 614.6 t in 2023. Exports, though growing from a very low base, did not offset the reduction in supply from abroad.

In 2024, new development initiatives were launched, including the PróMEL project to promote sustainable beekeeping and the financing of a honey extraction and processing plant in Sofala. Regulatory updates to environmental and forestry laws were also advanced, aiming to influence production practices and market quality.
