Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, Angola's milk market volume contracted from 300.1 thousand tons to 251.6 thousand tons. This decline coincided with a sharp depreciation of the local currency, which drove retail milk prices up by more than 160% between 2017 and 2021, eroding consumer purchasing power and reducing overall consumption.

The market saw a temporary recovery to 261.7 thousand tons in 2022. This growth was supported by investments in local production, including the installation of three new milk processing plants, such as a packaging unit by the Spanish group Pascual in partnership with Refriango. Concurrently, the government's strategy to lower prices of basic food items began yielding results, improving affordability. The expansion of local brands like MOMO and BOM DIA, with their own distribution networks, also strengthened domestic supply.

In 2023, the market volume fell again to 244.7 thousand tons. A consumer study revealed that 28% of Angolans reduced their consumption of dairy products compared to 2022, indicating a shift in preferences. Persistent price pressure, particularly on imported brands like Nido which saw a 65% price increase since February 2023, continued to constrain demand.
