Earlier Report Observations

From 2018, Myanmar's groundnut oil market was shaped by small-scale cottage industries and growing competition from cheaper palm oil imports. Production stabilized at 188 thousand tons in 2019 after demand weakened due to a widening price gap with palm oil and adulteration issues that eroded consumer trust. Despite reports that around 90% of domestic oil mills had ceased operations by 2020 due to fake oil sales and lack of competitiveness, total output rose to 205 thousand tons that year.

Output dipped to 195 thousand tons in 2021, likely pressured by global palm oil price fluctuations which affected domestic demand and pricing. A recovery followed, with production increasing to 215 thousand tons in 2022 and reaching 243 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was supported by industry and government efforts to intensify groundnut cultivation, promote improved seed varieties, and reduce post-harvest losses, aiming to cut reliance on palm oil imports.
