Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2020, the US grape market volume contracted from over 7 000 thousand tons to around 5 700 thousand tons. This decline was influenced by moderating alcohol consumption reducing demand for wine grapes and inflationary pressures raising production costs. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further disrupted consumer purchasing patterns and supply chains.
From 2021 onwards, market volume stabilized and began a gradual recovery, reaching nearly 5 900 thousand tons by 2023. The introduction of new grape varieties, such as those launched by Cornell Sun World, and a sustained consumer shift towards organic and premium grapes supported this turnaround. However, the market continued to face challenges from persistent inflation, labor shortages in California, and supply chain disruptions.
Throughout the period, grape producers adopted advanced technologies like AI-driven irrigation and expanded protected horticulture to improve efficiency and resilience. Environmental regulations pushing for sustainable practices also encouraged investment in these methods. Despite a smaller grape crush in 2023, an oversupply situation indicated structural shifts, while rising prices in value terms reflected the premiumization trend.
