Earlier Report Observations
The grape market volume grew from 27 485 thousand tons in 2018 to 28 890 thousand tons in 2019, driven primarily by a sharp expansion in the cultivated area of the popular Shine Muscat variety, which increased its share from 7.4% to 14.7% of total grape acreage. This expansion was supported by industry modernization and restructuring efforts under the Korea-Chile Free Trade Agreement, which enhanced production competitiveness.
After a stabilization in 2020 at 28 875 thousand tons, market growth resumed, reaching 29 982 thousand tons by 2022. The sustained popularity of Shine Muscat continued to drive volumes despite an overall decline in fruit cultivation area. Efforts to develop new varieties and the operation of a fruit growth quality management system to address climate change risks further supported production stability during this period.
In 2023, the market volume increased to 30 504 thousand tons, while the market value surged to 66 330 million US dollars. This significant rise in value was influenced by climate change effects, which put upward pressure on prices. Concurrently, the development of a high-quality grape industry focused on Shine Muscat in regions like Yeongcheon contributed to market expansion through processed food segments.
