From 2018 to 2020, grape production and market volume in Oceania showed a gradual decline, with output falling from 2.1 million tons to 1.8 million tons. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted global supply chains and distribution channels, contributing to the continued decrease in market activity.

In 2021, the market rebounded sharply, with production surging to 2.6 million tons and market value reaching $7.2 billion. This growth was primarily driven by a record wine grape harvest in Australia—the highest since 2006—and increased international demand for fresh grapes, particularly from the United States. The introduction of new disease-resistant table grape varieties also supported productivity.

After the peak, production and market size contracted in 2022 and 2023, falling to 2 million tons. Import and export volumes remained relatively stable, while global factors such as high production costs and competitive pressures from other exporting regions may have influenced the downturn.

Grape production in Oceania has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 1,932 thousand tonnes of grapes, which represents a slight decrease of 1.8% compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 13%, translating to an average annual decline of 4.5%.

After two years of decline, the value of grape production in Oceania increased. In 2020, the output was valued at 5,438 million US dollars, showing a modest rise of 3.8% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, however, production value decreased by 7.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 5,239 million US dollars, while the largest drop occurred in 2018 with an 8.1% decrease.

Grape exports from Oceania have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 161.8 thousand tonnes, marking a modest uptick of 5.2% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 43.5%, which corresponds to an average annual increase of 12.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the three largest markets for grape exports in volume terms were China, Indonesia, and Japan. Together, they accounted for 59.6% of total export flows during this period.

Grape exports from Oceania have risen for the third year in a row. In 2020, the export value totaled 455.4 million US dollars, up by 11.2% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 span, exports increased by 52%, equating to an average annual growth rate of 15.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, China, Indonesia, and Japan formed the core group of markets for grape exports in value terms. China accounted for 39.2% of exports, Indonesia for 11.1%, and Japan for 8.5%, together representing 58.8% of total export flows.

In 2020, grape imports into Oceania amounted to 55.2 thousand tonnes, which is 3.5% lower than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 10.2%, with an average annual decline of 3.5%. The largest drop was recorded in 2018 at 8.2%, while the highest increase occurred in 2019 with a 1.4% rise.
