The grape market volume in MENA increased from 5.4 million metric tons in 2018 to 5.8 million in 2019, supported by broad-based cultivation across numerous regional countries from Jordan to Morocco, which provided a diversified and resilient production base. A contraction to 5.2 million metric tons followed in 2020.

A gradual recovery lifted the market volume to 5.5 million metric tons by 2023. This growth phase was aided by the geographical expansion of grape cultivation in Egypt from Alexandria to Aswan, extending the fresh grape availability period and boosting productivity through trained farm labor.

Recent developments include Saudi Arabia's annual grape production surpassing 110,000 metric tons with 58% self-sufficiency, driven by state and local company support. Egypt's grape exports jumped to $285 million in the first half of 2024, reflecting new player expansion, while global supply increased due to Chinese investments in production and storage tech. Supply chain delays at Gulf ports also emerged as a factor.

Following two years of growth, grape production volume in the MENA region declined. In 2019, production reached its peak at 5 888 thousand tonnes, marking an 8.2% increase. However, by 2020, output fell to 5 266 thousand tonnes, representing a significant year-on-year decrease of 10.6%.

Grape export volumes from the MENA region have increased for three consecutive years. In 2020, exports reached 327.6 thousand tonnes, showing a strong year-on-year rise of 15.0%. From 2017 to 2020, export volumes grew by 58.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 16.5%.

Imports grapes to MENA

Grape import volumes into the MENA region have increased for two consecutive years. In 2018, imports hit their lowest point at 194.5 thousand tonnes, a 7.7% decline. In 2019, they rebounded with a 9.4% increase. By 2020, imports reached 227.0 thousand tonnes, showing a gradual year-on-year gain of 6.7%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, import volumes rose by 7.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, grape import volumes into the MENA region were highly diversified. The top three sources—India (14.8% of import volume), South Africa (10.0%), and Turkey (9.9%)—together accounted for only 34.7% of total flows, with the remaining 65.3% coming from a long tail of smaller markets.
