Earlier Report Observations

Grape production in Colombia experienced notable shifts from 2018 to 2020. Output rose to 67,632 t in 2019, fueled by increasing wine consumption spurred by the Vinos Colombia initiative to adapt premium grape varieties to local conditions. A simultaneous 35% decline in fresh grape exports by value redirected more fruit to domestic use. However, production plummeted to 28,009 t in 2020 due to persistent climatic and soil constraints that hampered harvests, necessitating imports of grape must to cover shortfalls.

Recovery began in 2021, with production reaching 34,559 t by 2022. This rebound was driven by rising per capita wine consumption and consumer preference for quality local wines, which bolstered demand for grapes. Regulatory support, including tax hikes on imported alcoholic beverages to protect domestic products, further encouraged local cultivation. Expansion of growing areas in Valle del Cauca and Huila, alongside growing fresh grape exports to Europe, diversified market outlets.

In 2023, output slightly eased to 33,993 t, as tropical climate challenges continued to test growers. Nonetheless, the market stayed vibrant through wine culture promotion like Expovinos and e‑commerce growth, enhancing grape accessibility. Health attributes such as antioxidants and vitamin C in grapes also sustained consumption interest post‑pandemic.
