This trend supported the expansion of direct sales channels such as farmers' markets in urban centers. Although volume growth stabilized near 1.5 million tonnes in 2022-2023, the rise of the frozen food segment opened new avenues for melon products, adding value to the market.

By 2023, increasing health awareness and a focus on eco-friendly packaging contributed to a notable rise in market value, reflecting a shift toward premium offerings. India's melon production grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 1,368 thousand tonnes of melons, marking an 8.1% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 24.7%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 7.6%.

In value, 2017-2020, M $ US

India's melon production value increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 854.3 million US dollars, up by 1.1% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, the value grew by 2.8%, averaging 0.9% per year. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 708.7 million US dollars, which represented a 14.7% decline. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest increase of 19.2%.

Exports melons from India

Exports in kind, t

In 2020, India exported 6,523 tonnes of melons, a strong 17.9% rise from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 36.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.8%. The peak was in 2018 at 6,732 tonnes, which was a 40.4% increase. However, exports fell by 17.8% in 2019.

Between 2017 and 2020, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Oman were the top buyers of Indian melons by volume. The UAE accounted for 69.0% of exports, Qatar for 7.0%, and Oman for 5.7%, together making up 81.7% of total exports.

India's melon exports in value terms reached 4,073 thousand US dollars in 2020, a 10.4% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 12.2%, averaging 3.9% annually. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a 4.8% drop.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and the Netherlands were the leading markets for Indian melons in value terms, collectively accounting for 78.0% of total exports.

India's melon imports declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 85 tonnes, a 67.3% decrease from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 85.7%, with an average annual decline of 47.7%.

The data shows irregular changes, indicating a volatile market. Imports peaked in 2017 and reached their lowest point in 2020, with a 4.4-fold difference between these years. In 2020, melon imports into India totalled 118 thousand US dollars, a 60.2% decrease from 2019. The largest increase was recorded in 2019 at 0.8%.
