Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the melon market in India expanded significantly, with volume growing from 1.2 million tonnes to 1.4 million tonnes. This initial surge was fueled by the introduction of new melon varieties and improved cultivation techniques, which boosted yields. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further accelerated demand as consumers sought fresh and healthy foods, while climate change enabled cultivation to spread to non-traditional regions like Ladakh, increasing local production.

Growth continued into 2021, with market volume reaching 1.5 million tonnes, driven by heightened consumer preference for health and sustainability. This trend supported the expansion of direct sales channels such as farmers' markets in urban centers. Although volume growth stabilized near 1.5 million tonnes in 2022-2023, the rise of the frozen food segment opened new avenues for melon products, adding value to the market.

By 2023, increasing health awareness and a focus on eco-friendly packaging contributed to a notable rise in market value, reflecting a shift toward premium offerings. Ongoing innovation, including the standardization of snap melon production practices, ensured consistent quality and supported the market's underlying strength.
