Earlier Report Observations

The Czech grape market opened the period at 158.9 thousand tons in 2018 but contracted sharply to 117.1 thousand tons in 2019, paralleled by a drop in domestic production from 103.7 to 68.0 thousand tons. That initial year saw weather-related pressures, as rising average temperatures and irregular rainfall affected viticulture, prompting the development of heat-resistant varieties and new cultivation techniques. A Wine Act amendment also introduced barrel restrictions aimed at curbing the black market, though without immediate major impact. By 2020, the market rebounded to 136.9 thousand tons, supported by a production recovery to 90.4 thousand tons.

In 2021, a partial revival of global wine consumption after the COVID-19 crisis helped lift the Czech grape market further to 141.6 thousand tons, while production held steady near 90.1 thousand tons. The following year, grape harvests climbed about 30% above the decade average, boosting output to 91.8 thousand tons and contributing to a stable market size of 139.1 thousand tons. Vineyard area expanded to 17 884.9 hectares, and the industry emphasized sustainability—promoting sparkling wine from domestic grapes and breeding fungus-resistant PIWI varieties to reduce chemical use.

By 2023, the market receded to 120.4 thousand tons, with production falling to 77.0 thousand tons. During this year, winemakers in southern Moravia anticipated a strong vintage with above‑average quantity and quality, potentially shaping future supply. A longer‑term plan was also announced to raise the country’s wine self‑sufficiency to 40% by 2045, targeting about 90 million liters of domestic grape‑based beverages.
