Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the grape market volume remained stable near 4.3 million tons before contracting to 4.0 million tons in 2020, while its value fell from $8.6 billion to $7.4 billion. This decline coincided with a period of unfavorable climatic conditions that pressured yields, although the industry's earlier restructuring under Raisins South Africa in 2018 helped maintain foundational stability.

From 2021, the market recovered, reaching 4.5 million tons and $8.8 billion in 2022. This rebound was supported by over R25 million in transformation projects and targeted investments in processing capacity. By 2023, despite a slight volume dip to 4.5 million tons, the market value surged to $10.0 billion, driven by premiumisation trends, improved export logistics from port enhancements, and packaging innovations that catered to health-conscious consumer demand.
