Earlier Report Observations

Bolivia's grape wine market expanded to 8.8 million liters in 2019, supported by the sector's ongoing development and efforts to diversify into new export markets like Paraguay. The industry, traditionally concentrated in the Tarija department, saw production rise as a result. However, the market stabilized around 8.7 million liters in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic and contraband issues dampened domestic demand, despite the accreditation of laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025:2018 standards improving quality controls for international markets.

Pandemic-related effects persisted into 2021, lowering the market volume to 8.7 million liters while the industry organized trade fairs to access international buyers. A recovery to 8.8 million liters occurred in 2022. The market then contracted to 8.4 million liters in 2023, primarily due to substantial wine stockpiles that reduced demand for grapes and constrained production, even as the sector gained visibility through the National Viticultural Fair (FENAVIT) and the promotion of the 'Hecho en Bolivia' brand.

In 2024, the harvest concluded with excellent grape quality despite challenging spring weather, showcasing grower resilience. Exports for the wine chain grew by 15.3%, driven by increases in fresh grapes, raisins, and must, although bulk wine export volumes had not yet returned to previous levels.
