Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, Bolivia's wine market volume remained relatively stable, averaging around 14 500 t per year. The presidential decree of 2018 initiated the country's accession to the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), which was finalized in late 2020, strengthening the sector's international ties. This period also saw the first significant export of Bolivian wine to Europe, with a shipment of about 7 000 bottles to Belgium in 2020, opening doors to demanding markets. International awards in 2021, including multiple gold medals at the Bacchus contest in Madrid, boosted the global image of Bolivian wines, coinciding with a gastronomic boom in major cities like La Paz that supported domestic consumption.

After peaking at 14 807 t in 2021, the market volume declined to 12 668 t in 2022 and further to 11 593 t in 2023. During this period, Bolivian wines continued to gain international acclaim, such as the 'TRI' wine from Campos de Solana winning several gold medals and being named Wine of the Year. A regulatory change in 2022 expanded duty-free import of winemaking machinery until September 2023, aiming to modernize local production facilities. The share of grapes destined for wine production in Bolivia increased significantly, reaching 60% by 2022, reflecting a shift in agricultural focus that supported domestic wine output while imports contracted sharply.
