Goat meat production in Morocco remained relatively stable between 2018 and 2019, peaking at 32 118 tons, but then entered a gradual decline, reaching 29 150 tons by 2023. This downward trend was primarily driven by recurrent droughts that compelled herders to sell off part of their livestock to maintain short-term supply, thereby reducing the breeding stock for future production. The government's decision to allow meat imports in 2018 to curb inflation did not translate into actual imports during this period, leaving domestic production as the sole source of market volume.

In 2024, the National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA) enacted stringent regulations governing the import of fresh, chilled, or frozen red meat, broadening the list of authorized exporting countries and offering tax exemptions to importers. These measures aim to boost supply and stabilize prices, as local production continues to be hampered by persistent drought and rising feed costs. However, consumer preference for locally sourced 'beldi' meat may temper demand for imported products, even as major operators adjust their strategies to reduce fattening rates and control production costs.
