Growth was most pronounced in 2019 and 2023, with annual rises of 4.8% and 4.2% respectively, while the period saw a moderate pace in other years.

In value terms, the market experienced a different trajectory. After a stable 2019, the market value declined by 2.3% in 2020 and a further 1.2% in 2021, dropping to 7 378 million US dollars. A sharp reversal occurred in 2022, with value jumping 6.7% to 7 872 million, followed by another 7.3% gain to 8 450 million in 2023.

Africa's goat meat production has risen for the third year in a row. In 2020, the continent produced 1 456 thousand tonnes of goat meat, representing a 1.5% increase compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 10.9%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 3.5%.

Africa's goat meat production value has declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 7 580 million US dollars, down 2.4% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value increased by 6.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.1%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 7 769 million US dollars, with the largest annual increase of 9.2% also occurring that year.

Africa exported 22 176 tonnes of goat meat in 2020, a decrease of 3.3% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 3.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -1.1%. The largest increase was recorded in 2019 at 1.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia dominated Africa's goat meat export structure in volume terms, while other countries collectively accounted for the remaining share.

Africa's goat meat export value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 115.5 million US dollars, down 7.1% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, export value decreased by 7.2%, equating to an average annual decline of 2.4%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 128.4 million US dollars, with the largest increase of 3.2% also occurring that year.

From 2017 to 2020, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia were the key destinations for Africa's goat meat exports in value terms, jointly accounting for 91.0% of total flows. Other partners individually played a much smaller role.

Africa's goat meat import volume declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 573 tonnes, down 1.4% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, import volume increased by 39.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.7%. The peak volume was recorded in 2018 at 687 tonnes, with the largest decline of 15.4% in 2019 and the largest increase of 67.3% in 2018.

From 2017 to 2020, Africa's goat meat import sources in volume terms were quite diverse. Spain (24.0% of imports), Saudi Arabia (6.4%), and Argentina (6.0%) together represented only 36.4% of total flows, indicating a broad partner portfolio.

From 2017 to 2020, Spain (22.1% of import value), Saudi Arabia (7.6%), and Australia (7.6%) formed the largest group of goat meat suppliers to Africa. However, their combined contribution was limited to 37.4% of total import value, reflecting a diversified country structure.
