Production recovered in 2021, lifting the market to 7.7 thousand tons, but then edged down slightly over the next two years. By 2023, the market stood at 7.6 thousand tons, with supply constraints emerging from a reduction in animal herds due to investor encroachment on pastures and a lack of government support for farmers.

Iraq's goat meat production has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 7 107 tonnes of goat meat, which represents a 7.3% decrease compared to 2019. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 15.1%, with an average annual decline rate of 5.3%.
