The Egyptian goat meat market experienced significant volatility between 2018 and 2023, with its volume falling sharply from 23.2 thousand t to 12 thousand t in 2019 before recovering to 22 thousand t by 2022 and then declining again to 20 thousand t in 2023.

The recovery from 2020 onward coincided with the suspension of red meat imports from Brazil and India due to mad cow disease outbreaks, which increased reliance on domestic production. An additional boost came in 2021 when the Ministry of Agriculture raised the price of sacrificial animals to EGP 75 per kg, directly improving producer incentives.

By 2023, retail prices had reached EGP 190 per kg, weakening consumer purchasing power and depressing demand. At the same time, promotional campaigns highlighting the health benefits of goat dairy products as an alternative to meat contributed to shifting consumption patterns, leading to the market contraction.

Egypt's goat meat production volume increased after two consecutive years of decline. In 2019, production hit its lowest point at 12 000 tons, but then rebounded significantly in 2020 to 16 000 tons, marking a 33.3% increase compared to the previous year. The most substantial decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 48.0%. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 52.1% overall, which translates to an average annual decline of 21.8%.

Egypt's goat meat production value also increased following two years of decrease. In 2019, the value reached its minimum at 50.2 million US dollars, but then surged in 2020 to 79.8 million US dollars, representing a 58.8% advance compared to 2019. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 48.6%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production value decreased by 44% in total, equating to an average annual rate of decline of 17.6%.

The market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. Exported goat meat volumes from Egypt peaked in 2018 at 13.1 tons, then fell sharply to their lowest point in 2019 at 0.1 tons, representing a dramatic 178-fold difference between these years. In 2020, exports recovered to 0.5 tons, which is a substantial 622.5% increase compared to 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 99.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates dominated Egypt's goat meat exports in volume terms, together accounting for 88.9% of total flows. Other destinations contributed much smaller individual shares.

The data reveals irregular changes, indicating a volatile market environment. Egypt's goat meat export value peaked in 2018 at 55.4 thousand US dollars, then plummeted to its lowest point in 2019 at 0.3 thousand US dollars, showing a 180-fold amplitude between these years. In 2020, exports rebounded to 2.7 thousand US dollars, a sharp rise of 760.4% compared to the previous year. The largest decline was recorded in 2019, with a decrease of 99.4%.
