Earlier Report Observations

The Egyptian chicken meat and offal market experienced strong growth from 2018 to 2021, with production increasing from 1 324 thousand t to 2 403 thousand t. This expansion was fueled by a USD 1 billion foreign investment agreement from the UAE into poultry breeding, laying, and broiler segments, coupled with the enforcement of Law 7 of 2008 that mandated chilled and frozen poultry trade. The use of alternative feeds like orange peel and olive pomace boosted animal health and output. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which reduced demand from the hospitality sector, the industry maintained over 97% self-sufficiency and continued to grow.

Production declined to 2 028 thousand t in 2022, reducing market size. In 2023, output recovered to 2 175 thousand t as competitively priced Brazilian chicken imports entered the market, putting downward pressure on domestic prices and stimulating consumption. Price stability at the poultry exchange between EGP 73 and 75 per kg also contributed to market normalization.
