The garlic market in Mali reached 24,627 t in 2018, largely driven by imports of 9,706 t. State support for agriculture, including input subsidies and price guarantees for producers, created a favorable environment. The state-owned Compagnie malienne pour le développement du textile (CMDT) played a key role in organizing agricultural production, indirectly influencing vegetable sectors like garlic. However, in 2019, market volume fell by 23.5% to 18,838 t, primarily due to a sharp 60% drop in imports. This decline coincided with reported agricultural difficulties such as droughts and rising input costs, which affected overall availability and demand.

From 2020 to 2021, the market stabilized around 18,500-18,700 t with minor declines. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge in global agricultural input prices, impacting producer costs. In 2022, garlic production jumped by 25.9% to 18,808 t, lifting market volume to 22,022 t. This growth occurred despite an embargo imposed by ECOWAS and UEMOA from January to July 2022, which disrupted input supply chains. The government implemented measures to encourage producers facing fertilizer shortages and higher input prices, stimulating domestic output.

In 2023, production dropped by 12.8% to 16,404 t, and market volume declined to 19,705 t. Unfavorable weather conditions and security tensions adversely affected agricultural activity. Additionally, the government set price ceilings for certain food products, potentially influencing market incentives. For 2024, garlic imports continued to fall, reaching 2,755 t, amid Mali's decision to leave ECOWAS, creating uncertainty for regional trade, and energy constraints affecting supply chains.
