Between 2018 and 2021, the fresh or chilled garlic market volume in Angola contracted from 17 161 t to 14 074 t. In 2019, the country reached self-sufficiency in garlic production, which reduced import dependency, though domestic output also fell during this period.

A strong expansion occurred from 2022, with market volume reaching 18 765 t in 2022 and 19 001 t in 2023. This growth was primarily driven by a significant increase in garlic production from family farms, supported by the government's launch of the Strategic Food Reserve (REA) in 2022 to ensure supply security and stabilize prices for essential goods.

In 2024, the horticultural sector, including garlic, saw production grow by 67.4%, sustained by family farming. The REA continued to operate, while currency depreciation and inflationary pressures led to rising garlic prices, with the informal market remaining a key distribution channel.

In 2020, Angola produced 11 136 tons of garlic, representing a 1.2% increase compared to the previous year. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 12 667 tons, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 13.1% decrease.

Angola's garlic imports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, import volume reached 3 375 tons, showing a slight decrease of 2.8% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 12.6%, with an annualized decline of 4.4%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 4 514 tons. The largest decrease occurred in 2019 with a 23.0% drop, while the most significant increase was in 2018 with a 16.8% rise.
