Between 2018 and 2023, Mali's production of dried shelled cow peas showed significant variability in a market reliant solely on domestic output. The period began under enhanced transparency mechanisms, including the Agricultural Market Observatory disseminating market information and the Ministry of Economy publishing updated price benchmarks for public procurement. Production started at 258 thousand tons in 2018 before dropping to 215 thousand tons the following year.

Output surged to a peak of 298 thousand tons in 2020. This increase coincided with the reinforcement of public procurement regulations late in the year, including the publication of a compliance audit reference guide for government food purchases, which provided more structured demand and transparency for agricultural producers.

After a decline in 2021, production recovered to 250 thousand tons in 2022. This growth was primarily driven by increased demand from the animal feed sector, which was modernizing and expanding its output, and by Mali's high dependence on cereal imports. Global conflicts disrupting wheat supplies likely made local legumes like cow peas more attractive. Production then moderated to 235 thousand tons in 2023 under a regulatory framework that maintained price freedom while providing reference prices for public procurement.
