Africa's garlic production saw a two-year increase before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 1,013 K t, but by 2020 it had fallen to 910 K t, marking a 10.1% decrease from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 28.1%, which translates to an annualized rate of 8.6%. The most significant year-on-year increase occurred in 2018, with a jump of 37.9%.

Exports garlic from Africa

The market showed an unstable trend over the observed period. Exports hit their lowest point in 2018 at 8.0 K t and peaked in 2020 at 16.6 K t, representing a 2.1-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Africa exported 16.6 K t of garlic, which was 1.5% higher than in 2019. The largest decline was recorded in 2018 at 28.1%, while the most substantial increase occurred in 2019, surging by 103.5%.

An analysis of exports in kind from 2017 to 2020 reveals a broad distribution across many markets. Russia accounted for 18.8% of exports, Asia (not elsewhere specified) for 11.4%, and Poland for 5.6%. Together, these three partners made up only 35.8% of total flows, with the remaining 64.2% spread across other partners.

Exports in value, M $ US

The data indicates irregular changes, pointing to a volatile market environment. Exports bottomed in 2018 at 16.0 M $ US and peaked in 2020 at 43.6 M $ US, showing a 2.7-fold difference. In 2020, Africa's garlic exports were valued at 43.6 M $ US, which was 39.8% higher than in 2019. The largest decline was in 2018 at 49.1%, while the biggest increase occurred in 2019, rising by 95.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia, Asia (not elsewhere specified), and Poland played notable but not dominant roles as buyers of African garlic in value terms. Russia accounted for 22.6% of exports, Asia for 12.7%, and Poland for 6.4%. Their combined share reached 41.7% of total exports, with the rest distributed among other partners.

Imports garlic to Africa

Imports in kind, K t

After a two-year decline, garlic imports into Africa increased. In 2019, imports hit their lowest point at 96.9 K t, but by 2020 they had risen to approximately 128.9 K t, reflecting a sharp gain of 33.0% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 30.2%, equating to an annualized rate of 9.2%. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 1.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, China and Spain were the primary sources for garlic imports into Africa in kind, jointly absorbing 84.0% of total imports. The remaining volume was scattered across smaller markets.

Following a two-year decline, garlic import volumes into Africa increased. In 2019, imports reached their minimum at 74.1 M $ US, but by 2020 they had climbed to a total value, up by 49.3% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 17.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.6%. The largest decline was recorded in 2018 at 13.4%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, China and Spain remained the key partner countries for garlic imports into Africa in value terms, with a combined share of 88.6% of total flows. Other partners accounted for the remainder.
