Earlier Report Observations

The African garlic market grew from 1.07 million tons in 2018 to 1.28 million tons in 2023. A notable interruption occurred in 2020 when market volume contracted to 1.02 million tons. This downturn coincided with an El Niño-linked drought that caused crop failures and steep yield declines across several agricultural sectors, simultaneously increasing production costs as domestic fuel prices rose in response to international crude oil markets.

Subsequent years saw a robust recovery, with market volume expanding to 1.20 million tons in 2022 and reaching 1.28 million tons in 2023. The period through 2024 was further shaped by continued climatic challenges, including ongoing El Niño drought effects, and initiatives such as market access programs aimed at increasing participation from smallholder farmers.
