The market volume for fresh garlic in Malawi experienced considerable fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 557.4 t in 2018, it fell sharply by half to 276.1 t in 2019. A strong recovery followed in 2020, with volume reaching 463.1 t, though still below the 2018 peak. After a moderate decline to 428.1 t in 2021, the market contracted again to 310.9 t in 2022 before rising to 370.7 t in 2023.

In 2024, the state-owned Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) remained active in crop buying for the season, influencing agricultural markets including garlic. Concurrently, the government's Agricultural Commercialisation (AGCOM) Project continued its work to transform smallholder agriculture from subsistence to commercial, linking producers with off-takers and potentially affecting garlic production and marketing channels.
