Following a two-year decline, Africa's dried shelled bean exports rebounded. In 2020, exports totaled 480.5 thousand metric tons, up 11.2% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 4.4%, equating to an annualized decline of 1.5%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 432.1 thousand metric tons, which experienced the largest drop of 13.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, India, Vietnam, and Pakistan were among the top buyers of dried shelled beans from Africa, accounting for 12.9%, 5.2%, and 5.1% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, they represented just 23.3% of total exports, indicating a broadly diversified partner base.

Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 2.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -0.9%. Analysis of exports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 reveals a broad distribution across many markets. India, Turkey, and Pakistan accounted for 13.2%, 6.1%, and 5.1% of exports in value, respectively, totaling only 24.5% of total flows. The remaining 75.5% was distributed among other partners.

Africa's dried shelled bean imports declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 160.7 thousand metric tons, down 17.2% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 48.8%, equating to an annualized decline of 20.0%.
