Earlier Report Observations

The Algerian fruit and vegetable juice market expanded from 105.1 million liters in 2018 to 112.2 million liters in 2019, partly driven by the entry of the international player Agrana Fruit, which acquired a 49% stake in the major local processor ELAFRUITS, strengthening the presence of a global actor in the juice concentrate sector. However, market volume dropped sharply to 95.4 million liters in 2020.

After stabilizing at 94.3 million liters in 2021, the market recovered to 96.7 million liters in 2022 following the adoption of an inter-ministerial technical regulation in March 2022 that set precise standards for juice and nectar production, manufacturing, and labeling. Concurrently, consumer preferences shifted from carbonated drinks towards juices and nectars, boosting demand. By 2023, market volume reached 99.2 million liters, supported by the arrival of La Belle Group in the northwest region and increased household penetration of refrigerators-freezers, which encouraged consumption of processed products like juices.

Throughout the period, the industry faced challenges from weak and irregular local agricultural output, often relying on imported raw materials to meet demand. Nonetheless, domestic production fully supplied the market, with private companies accounting for the majority of operators. By 2024, further regulatory steps, including a temporary VAT exemption on locally produced fresh fruits and vegetables and investments in modernization by industry associations, aimed to strengthen the production chain and improve quality standards.
