The market for fresh or chilled duck meat in Turkey opened the period at 654 t in 2018, supported by calls from industry bodies to diversify meat consumption and the growing popularity of duck in Turkish cuisine. However, after a brief increase to 644 t in 2020, the market volume contracted consistently, reaching 450 t by 2023.

This decline coincided with a sharp drop in imports to negligible levels and a rise in exports, which peaked at 49 t in 2023. Sectoral goals to expand into new export markets, highlighted in 2023, directed more production abroad. Domestic production also fell from a high of 658 t in 2020 to 499 t in 2023.

Regulatory developments in 2024, including changes to price labeling rules by the Ministry of Trade, increased market transparency. Additionally, growing consumer demand for healthy and organic products, along with EU deforestation legislation affecting sustainability requirements, shaped the later years of the period.

Turkey produced 658.4 tonnes of fresh or chilled duck meat in 2020, marking a 7.9% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 14.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.7%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 2.3%, while the biggest increase was in 2018, at 8.7%.

After two years of growth, Turkey's exports of fresh or chilled duck meat declined in 2020. Exports stood at 26 059 kg, representing a sharp 37.5% drop compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 13.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.4%. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 41 673 kg, which also saw the largest increase of 44.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey supplied fresh or chilled duck meat to a wide range of markets. The top three destinations—Cyprus (17.1% of exports by volume), Iraq (11.9%), and Vietnam (11.7%)—accounted for 40.8% of total exports, while numerous smaller markets made up the remaining 59.2%.

The market showed significant volatility during these years. Exports peaked in 2019 and hit their lowest point in 2017, with a 3.1-fold difference between these extremes. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at $115.6 thousand, while the largest increase occurred in 2018, at 104.4%.
