Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2021, the South Korean fresh grape market saw gradual shifts in volume. Market size in physical terms decreased from 234 thousand tons in 2018 to 216 thousand tons in 2021, while domestic production remained relatively stable around 168 thousand tons. During the initial period, consumer trends favoring quality over price and small-packaged seasonal items supported demand for fresh produce, particularly among growing single- and two-person households.
Starting in 2022, domestic production increased notably, reaching 196 thousand tons in 2023, whereas imports fell sharply from 69 thousand tons in 2019 to 33 thousand tons in 2023. This shift was primarily driven by rising output of domestic Shine Muscat grapes, which displaced a portion of import volume. The expansion of greenhouse cultivation and diversification of grape varieties broadened domestic supply options. Concurrent government policies aimed at enhancing competitiveness—such as promoting smart farms and expanding online wholesale markets—supported production scale and efficiency.
