The market for fresh grapes in Romania opened the period at 1 182 thousand tonnes in 2018, supported by the adoption of strict contractual rules for wine grape quality and delivery, alongside industry modernization efforts focusing on technology and terroir diversity. However, by 2020, the total market volume had contracted to 979 thousand tonnes, driven primarily by an 18% drop in domestic production due to adverse climatic conditions and a fragmented agricultural landscape.

A recovery to 1 058 thousand tonnes occurred in 2021, but severe drought in 2022 cut harvests by 15-20% and was compounded by mold outbreaks in southern regions, slashing the market volume to 861 thousand tonnes. The market then stabilized around 851 thousand tonnes in 2023; despite reported increases in cultivated area, weather-related challenges affected sugar accumulation and acidity levels in white grapes, leading to earlier harvests and limiting output growth.

Entering 2024, the harvest commenced several weeks earlier due to high temperatures, with estimates pointing to a notable production decline in the south caused by late frost and hail, indicating continued climatic pressure on supply.

Romania's fresh grape production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 933 thousand tonnes, marking a modest 4.2% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 12.6%, with an average annual decline of 4.4%. The highest output was recorded in 2018 at 1 141 thousand tonnes, which represented a 6.9% increase. The sharpest drop occurred in 2019, with a 14.6% decrease.
