Earlier Report Observations

The Hungarian fresh grape market volume decreased from 534.4 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 439.2 thousand tonnes in 2020. Regulatory changes on vine planting, including deadlines for converting replanting rights from legal reserves until July 2018 and a temporary restriction on planting rights until December 2018, shaped the industry at the start of the period. The market continued to contract in 2019, and by 2020, a further extension for rights purchased from private individuals until the end of the year did not prevent a decline.

A slight recovery to 447.4 thousand tonnes occurred in 2021, coinciding with grape producers' pressure for a 20% increase in purchase prices. However, in 2022, the market volume fell again to 425.3 thousand tonnes, primarily due to extreme weather conditions like drought and the cost pressures stemming from the war in Ukraine. The following year, high production costs and low grape purchase prices led many growers to consider uprooting vineyards, contributing to a further drop to 417.8 thousand tonnes in 2023.
