Earlier Report Observations

The sour cherries market in Armenia started from a relatively high base of 4 736 tons in 2018, supported by initial market development, the entry of new players, and state agricultural subsidies aimed at processing and export promotion. However, the market volume declined to 3 157 tons in 2019 and further to 2 794 tons in 2020, with the latter drop largely attributed to supply chain disruptions and shifts in demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Post-pandemic, the market showed a slight recovery to 2 829 tons in 2021, facilitated by the entry of new small and medium enterprises focusing on sour cherry varieties and increased state subsidies for technology modernization. A subsequent dip to 2 123 tons in 2022 coincided with the adoption of new laws on agricultural product quality control and export regulation, which may have temporarily affected production. Growth resumed in 2023, reaching 2 675 tons, driven by state policy shifts toward agricultural digitalization and the emergence of new product segments including organic and high-quality sour cherries.

Throughout the period, evolving consumer preferences toward natural and health-conscious foods underpinned domestic demand, while continued state export support helped boost international sales, reflected in rising export volumes.
