Earlier Report Observations

The fresh grape market in Afghanistan expanded from 784 to 974 thousand tons between 2018 and 2019. This growth was driven by a rise in domestic production from 984 to 1,113 thousand tons, while exports fell from 201 to 139 thousand tons. The export decline was linked to the blockade of the key Spin Boldak route to Pakistan, which prompted a shift toward alternative export corridors through Uzbekistan to Russia, China, and India. This diversification helped stimulate local grape output for new international markets.

Following the 2019 peak, the market volume contracted for three consecutive years, dropping to 795 thousand tons by 2022. Production also decreased to 910 thousand tons that year, with exports fluctuating between 76 and 143 thousand tons. The period reflected a broad downward trend without singular disruptive events driving the movement.

A recovery occurred in 2023, with the market volume rebounding to 945 thousand tons. This was supported by a sharp increase in production to 1,086 thousand tons, which more than offset a simultaneous rise in exports to 143 thousand tons.
