The market for shelled almonds in Afghanistan expanded strongly between 2018 and 2023. The total market volume more than tripled, rising from 9 323 tons to 27 657 tons, while its value increased from $60.3 million to $148.3 million.

This growth was underpinned by a sharp rise in domestic production, which more than doubled from 12 065 tons to 30 241 tons. Although import and export flows fluctuated throughout the period, the net result was a consistent increase in the quantity of almonds available for domestic consumption.

Afghanistan's shelled almond production increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 18 092 tonnes of shelled almonds, marking a modest year-over-year rise of 1.8%. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 98.7%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 25.7%.
