The market for shelled almonds in Afghanistan expanded strongly between 2018 and 2023. The total market volume more than tripled, rising from 9 323 tons to 27 657 tons, while its value increased from $60.3 million to $148.3 million.

This growth was underpinned by a sharp rise in domestic production, which more than doubled from 12 065 tons to 30 241 tons. Although import and export flows fluctuated throughout the period, the net result was a consistent increase in the quantity of almonds available for domestic consumption.

Afghanistan's shelled almond production increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 18 092 tonnes of shelled almonds, marking a modest year-over-year rise of 1.8%. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 98.7%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 25.7%.

Afghanistan's shelled almond production value also rose for the third year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 118.1 million US dollars, reflecting a strong increase of 17.2% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value surged by 86.1%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 23.0%.

The market performance for shelled almond exports showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2019, with a 1.9-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Afghanistan exported 4 233 tonnes of shelled almonds, representing a sharp decline of 31.8% from the previous year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 6 211 tonnes, with the largest year-over-year increase of 86.0% also occurring that year.

From 2017 to 2020, India, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates were the leading destinations for Afghanistan's shelled almond exports in volume terms. India accounted for 53.9% of exports, Turkey for 16.5%, and the United Arab Emirates for 11.5%, together making up 81.9% of total export flows.

In 2020, Afghanistan exported 27.643 million US dollars worth of shelled almonds, down by 21.5% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value increased by 18.9%, corresponding to an annualized growth rate of 5.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 22.613 million US dollars, while the highest was in 2019 at 35.232 million US dollars, with the largest year-over-year increase of 55.8% also in 2019.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, import volumes grew by 738.1%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 103.1%.
