Earlier Report Observations

Production of formaldehyde in Belgium increased from 58.8 thousand tons in 2019 to 73.4 thousand tons in 2021, before declining to 65.9 thousand tons in 2022. The domestic market volume, however, contracted significantly over the same period, falling from 69.6 thousand tons in 2019 to 43.8 thousand tons in 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 reduced consumption of petroleum-based products, dampening local demand for formaldehyde used in downstream industries. Despite this, production remained robust as exports grew, reaching 47.9 thousand tons in 2020.

In value terms, formaldehyde production rose sharply from $15.3 million in 2019 to $24.7 million in 2021, driven largely by soaring energy prices that increased input costs. The market value followed a volatile path, peaking at $21.0 million in 2021 before dropping to $14.0 million in 2022. Record-high fuel and gas prices in 2022, linked to geopolitical tensions and reduced Russian imports, raised manufacturing expenses and further squeezed domestic consumption.

A key development for the sector was the start of construction in 2022 of a sustainable methanol plant at the INOVYN site in Antwerp, aiming to produce 8 thousand tons annually. This project, the first of its kind in Belgium, is expected to enhance local feedstock supply for formaldehyde production in the future. Meanwhile, Belgium's energy transition policies, including green molecule initiatives since 2018, continue to shape the industrial landscape.
