The period concluded with a substantial uptick to 690 thousand tons in 2023.

This growth represents an addition of approximately 44 thousand tons to Africa's annual fonio output, highlighting the crop's developing role in the regional agricultural landscape.

Africa's fonio production rebounded in 2020 after two consecutive years of decline. The continent produced 661 400 tonnes of fonio that year, marking a moderate 4.1% increase compared to 2019. Production had reached its lowest point in 2019 at 635 200 tonnes, following a 3.0% decline in 2018.
