The launch of the AgriFARM project in 2018, aimed at sustainably increasing incomes and market access for family farms in fonio-producing regions, provided foundational support for the sector. Market volume saw a slight contraction to 459 thousand tons in 2019 but rebounded to 480 thousand tons in 2020 and further to 484 thousand tons in 2021, as the project's continued implementation strengthened agricultural resilience and local commercialization channels.

Government measures to secure supply and stabilize prices became prominent from 2022. Agreements with the private sector to ensure the provision of essential goods, including fonio, helped the market grow to 487 thousand tons in 2022 despite global freight cost increases and supply chain disruptions. This growth continued to 490 thousand tons in 2023, aided by maintained tax and customs exemptions designed to lower consumer prices for basic necessities.

In 2024, authorities launched new initiatives to bolster the fonio sector, including a call for startups and SMEs to enhance competitiveness and exports, alongside an agricultural campaign emphasizing investment. These steps point to ongoing institutional efforts to develop the market's value chain and commercial potential.

After a two-year decline, fonio production in Guinea rebounded. In 2020, the country produced 480.3 thousand tonnes of fonio, marking a 4.6% increase from the previous year. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 459.3 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 3.8%.
