Africa's production of semi-milled or wholly milled rice grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, the continent produced 14 045 thousand tons, marking a sharp increase of 28.4% compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 32.1%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 9.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 10 155 thousand tons, with the largest decline that year reaching 4.5%.

Exports semi-milled or wholly milled rice from Africa

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2018 at 60 thousand tons and peaked in 2020 at 137 thousand tons, showing a 2.3-fold increase between these years. In 2020, Africa exported 137 thousand tons of semi-milled or wholly milled rice, up 7.1% from the previous year. Africa's export value of semi-milled or wholly milled rice increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 240 million US dollars, a significant rise of 61.0% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 196.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 43.7%.

After two years of growth, Africa's imports of semi-milled or wholly milled rice declined. In 2020, imports stood at 9 638 thousand tons, down 5.5% year-over-year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 17.1%, equating to an average annual rate of 5.4%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 10 197 thousand tons, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 18.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, India, Thailand, and China were the key sources for imports in kind, accounting for 30.9%, 29.7%, and 10.7% of total flows, respectively. Together, these three countries represented 71.2% of all imports in kind during this period.

Africa's import value of semi-milled or wholly milled rice rose for the third year in a row. In 2020, imports amounted to 4 718 million US dollars, showing a moderate increase of 7.4% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, import value grew by 36.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.9%.

During 2017–2020, Thailand, India, and Pakistan were the leading destinations in the import structure by value, with shares of 31.3%, 28.7%, and 9.9%, respectively. Combined, these three countries accounted for 69.9% of total import flows in value terms.
