Earlier Report Observations

The fonio market volume in Western Africa fluctuated between 2018 and 2020, starting at 646.2 thousand tons in 2018. That year, in Burkina Faso, the urban market was entirely supplied by local processors, while in Mali, the value chain was studied to enhance climate resilience and women's incomes. The volume edged down to 634.9 thousand tons in 2019 before recovering to 661.1 thousand tons in 2020, with production and consumption concentrated in Guinea, Nigeria, and Mali.

From 2021 to 2023, market volume continued to expand, reaching 689.9 thousand tons in 2023. The growth in 2023 was partly driven by increased production in Ghana to approximately 3,000 metric tons, supported by investments and organizations promoting fonio's nutritional benefits. Simultaneously, in Guinea, changes in the supply chain, including the emergence of producer cooperatives and the launch of a Fairtrade program in late 2023, began altering market structure by reducing processor monopoly and improving farmer returns.

In 2024, further initiatives strengthened the market foundation: in Guinea, the fonio program obtained Fairtrade certification, while in Burkina Faso, production of pre-cooked fonio grew by over 1,200 tons in three years due to improved processing and market coordination. New product innovations such as biodegradable packaging from a Guinean startup and fonio-based beer from an international collaboration, along with expanded distribution in the United States and the United Kingdom, fostered greater global interest in this resilient crop.
