Earlier Report Observations
Fig production in Turkey increased from 306.5 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 356 thousand tonnes in 2023, while the market volume in kind rose from 230.6 thousand tonnes to 269 thousand tonnes over the same period. This expansion was supported by export-oriented initiatives, such as the launch of fresh fig exports for Sarılop and black varieties in 2018 and the subsequent strengthening of Turkey's position in key markets like the United States and Germany by 2021.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 altered consumer behavior, boosting demand for dried fruits including figs, which contributed to higher domestic consumption. Concurrently, export targets aiming for $50 million from dried fig sales and plans to access Far Eastern markets via air cargo provided further impetus for production growth in the following years.
In value terms, the fig market reached $1.025 billion in 2023, recovering from a dip in 2019-2020. The industry's focus on export development and adaptation to new market conditions underpinned the steady increase in both volume and revenue.
