The European market for extracts and juices of meat, fish and aquatic invertebrates contracted significantly from 33 990 tons in 2018 to 24 967 tons in 2020, with production falling from 36 491 tons to 29 001 tons over the same two-year period.

A strong recovery followed, lifting market volume to 30 612 tons in 2021 and then to 35 660 tons in 2022, driven by a sharp rise in domestic production which reached 43 541 tons.

In 2023, market volume decreased to 33 017 tons, influenced by rising sector costs and reduced consumer purchasing power which curtailed demand across the European region.

Europe's production of extracts and juices from meat, fish, and aquatic invertebrates has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, output reached 29 001 tonnes, representing a 14.5% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 31.3%, which translates to an average annual decline of 11.8%.

Europe's exports of extracts and juices from meat, fish, and aquatic invertebrates have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 13 303 tonnes, showing a moderate rise of 8.8% over the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 8.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.9%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 10 647 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 26.8%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the biggest increase at 14.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, Switzerland, and the United States were the top destinations for Europe's exports of extracts and juices from meat, fish, and aquatic invertebrates in volume terms. Japan accounted for 9.4% of exports, Switzerland for 3.1%, and the United States for 1.4%. Together, these three countries represented 13.9% of total export flows.

Europe's export value of extracts and juices from meat, fish, and aquatic invertebrates has risen for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports amounted to 116.4 million US dollars, marking a 6.2% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 12.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 103.1 million US dollars, which also saw a slight decline of 0.1%. The largest increase occurred in 2019 at 6.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Europe's export value of extracts and juices from meat, fish, and aquatic invertebrates was distributed across a wide range of partners. Japan led with 10.5% of exports, followed by Switzerland at 4.3%, and the United States at 2.7%. Combined, these three countries accounted for 17.5% of total export flows, reflecting a diverse partner portfolio.

After two years of decline, Europe's imports of extracts and juices from meat, fish, and aquatic invertebrates rebounded in 2020. Imports reached 9 269 tonnes, a sharp increase of 36.7% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 5.7%, with an average annual decline of 1.9%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 6 783 tonnes, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 17.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Brazil, Thailand, and Turkey were the main sources for Europe's imports of extracts and juices from meat, fish, and aquatic invertebrates in volume terms. Brazil accounted for 12.1% of imports, Thailand for 2.1%, and Turkey for 2.0%. Together, these three countries made up 16.2% of total import flows.

Following two years of growth, Europe's import value of extracts and juices from meat, fish, and aquatic invertebrates declined in 2020. Imports totaled 97.8 million US dollars, down by 2.3% from the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 100.2 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 0.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Brazil, Norway, and New Zealand were among the largest suppliers of extracts and juices from meat, fish, and aquatic invertebrates to Europe in value terms. Brazil accounted for 28.8% of imports, Norway for 1.7%, and New Zealand for 1.4%. Even combined, these three countries represented only 31.8% of total import flows, indicating a highly diversified partner base.
