Earlier Report Observations

The market for extracts and juices of meat, fish and aquatic invertebrates in Southern Africa opened the period at 671 tons in 2018, a year marked by the introduction of the Aquaculture Development Bill aimed at providing aquatic animal health services and supporting the growth of the aquaculture sector. This was followed by a contraction to 451 tons in 2019 and 430 tons in 2020, before a recovery to 568 tons in 2021.

Market volume then declined to 516 tons in 2022 and 480 tons in 2023. During 2022, the South African National Standard SANS 3091 was published, setting comprehensive guidelines for the handling, preparation, processing, and quality of chilled finfish, marine molluscs, and crustaceans to enhance product safety and standardization. The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development also issued aquaculture brochures and guidance on authorization requirements to improve industry compliance and knowledge.

In 2024, the broader seafood export sector showed an 8.6% increase in value, driven by fresh fish and molluscs, while major players reported mixed results: Sea Harvest Group achieved revenue and profit growth, whereas Oceana Group faced a decline in operating profit. The aquaculture industry continued to navigate challenges such as environmental regulations enforcement and limited water availability.
