Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for extracts and juices of meat and aquatic invertebrates in Africa declined from 1 568 tons to 1 309 tons. The proposed Aquaculture Development Bill in South Africa, introduced in 2018, aimed to provide regulatory support and enhance aquatic animal health services, which could have helped maintain sector activity initially despite the overall contraction.

The market rebounded to 1 517 tons in 2021 before dipping to 1 424 tons in 2022. The publication of the South African National Standard SANS 3091 in August 2022 set comprehensive guidelines for the handling and quality of chilled finfish and seafood, likely requiring operational adjustments across processors that temporarily affected supply and contributed to the lower volume that year.

By 2023, market volume recovered to 1 551 tons, nearly reaching the 2018 level. This increase was supported by a rise in imports, which more than doubled from the previous year, indicating stronger external supply flows into the region.
