Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for prepared or preserved beef and offal in Africa varied considerably between 2018 and 2023. After reaching 52 thousand tons in 2018, it fell to 35 thousand tons in 2019, then rose to 49 thousand tons in 2021 before declining to 42 thousand tons in 2023.

In 2023, outbreaks of Foot-and-Mouth disease and persistent load shedding disrupted beef production and supply chains, contributing to a tighter market. Meanwhile, animal feed production reached 5.88 million tons, supporting the underlying livestock base.

By 2024, the opening of the Saudi Arabian market for beef exports created new opportunities for producers. State-led initiatives, such as the Land Development Support Programme, were implemented to assist developing farmers, while industry efforts focused on improving traceability to meet export requirements.
