This growth coincided with amendments to competition rules for essential goods and a concerted push to increase local agricultural output, which reached 7.8 billion francs in value. Into 2024, ongoing debates on food transition and the launch of a terroir product market in Tahiti highlighted continued focus on local fresh produce.

In Polynesia, edible brassicas production reached 498 tonnes in 2020, marking a significant 12.3% year-over-year contraction. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 12%, which translates to an annualized decline of 4.2%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 435 tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 568 tonnes. The sharpest drop happened in 2018, when production decreased by 23.2%, whereas the largest increase was observed in 2019, with a 30.6% rise.

Polynesia's exports of edible brassicas declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 1.7 tonnes, reflecting a sharp 76.2% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports dropped by 93.6%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -60.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for Polynesia's edible brassicas exports were New Zealand, accounting for 39.3% of exports in kind, the United States with 28.8%, and Australia at 15.1%. Together, these three countries represented 83.2% of total export flows.

Throughout 2017-2020, New Zealand, the United States, and Australia remained the key partners for Polynesia's edible brassicas exports in value terms. New Zealand accounted for 31.3% of export value, the United States for 28.8%, and Australia for 6.6%. Collectively, these three countries made up 66.7% of total export flows.

Polynesia's imports of edible brassicas increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached approximately 958.6 tonnes, up by 10.3% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 18.6%, equating to an annualized rate of 5.9%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 803.4 tonnes, with a slight decline of 0.6% that year.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States and New Zealand clearly dominated Polynesia's edible brassicas imports in kind, jointly accounting for 96.2% of total flows. Other countries held much smaller shares during this period.
