The market for edible brassicas in Fiji showed strong growth between 2018 and 2023, with volume more than doubling from 5 127 t to 10 675 t. This expansion was marked by two major surges: a 41.7% jump in 2020 to 7 373 t, followed by a period of stabilization, and then a further 48.6% increase in 2023 to over 10 675 t.

After the initial leap in 2020, market volume remained relatively stable around 7 200 t in 2021 and 2022, with a marginal decline of less than 0.3%. This plateau was broken in 2023 when the market entered a new growth phase, adding nearly 3 500 t in a single year.

The rise in total market size was primarily supported by a steady increase in domestic production, which grew from 4 581 t in 2018 to 10 172 t in 2023. Imports and exports played a minor role, with imports fluctuating between 444 t and 684 t and exports remaining below 60 t throughout the period.

Fiji's edible brassicas production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 6 942 tonnes of edible brassicas, marking a 48.9% rise compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 121.6%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 30.4%.

Edible brassicas exports from Fiji have risen for the second year in a row. In 2020, Fiji exported 11.9 tonnes of edible brassicas, an 11.2% increase from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 11.9%, averaging an annualized rate of 3.8%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 7.9 tonnes, which represented a 26.0% decline from the previous year. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest increase, with exports jumping by 35.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main buyers of edible brassicas from Fiji were Tuvalu, accounting for 48.4% of exports in kind, New Zealand with 8.7%, and Kiribati at 6.8%. Together, these three countries comprised 63.9% of Fiji's total edible brassicas exports in kind.

After two years of growth, edible brassicas exports from Fiji declined in value. In 2020, exports amounted to 19 thousand US dollars, a sharp reduction of 53.6% compared to 2019. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 40 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 52.4%.

Over the period 2017–2020, Tuvalu was the largest contributor to Fiji's edible brassicas exports in value terms, making up 51.9% of the total. Kiribati followed with 16.0%, and Nauru accounted for 1.5%. Collectively, these three countries represented 69.5% of Fiji's total export value in this category.

Following two years of growth, edible brassicas imports into Fiji declined. In 2020, Fiji imported 443.7 tonnes of edible brassicas, a significant reduction of 20.0% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 3.8%, with an annualized decline rate of 1.3%. The highest import volume was in 2019 at 554.4 tonnes, while 2018 recorded the largest increase of 20.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Fiji's imports of edible brassicas in kind were heavily concentrated on New Zealand and Australia, which together accounted for 99.8% of the total volume.

Edible brassicas imports into Fiji have declined in value for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 686 thousand US dollars, reflecting a sharp drop of 28.4% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 15.8%, averaging an annualized decline of 5.6%. The peak value was in 2018 at 1 121 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 37.6%.
