Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh edible brassicas in Pakistan expanded from 253 thousand tons in 2018 to 290 thousand tons in 2020. This growth was supported by increased imports, which rose from 0.2 thousand tons to 16.2 thousand tons over the period, while domestic production remained relatively stable.

A sharp turnaround occurred in 2021, when market volume jumped to 389 thousand tons, driven by a surge in production to 425 thousand tons. The following year saw a modest contraction to 375 thousand tons as production eased slightly.

In 2023, the market size declined to 338 thousand tons despite record production of 492 thousand tons, as exports tripled to 154 thousand tons. This export surge was facilitated by improved logistics under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which cut transit times, and the launch of the Pakistan Fruits and Vegetables Export Strategy 2023-2027. By 2024, vegetable exports had grown by 43.2%, with brassicas shipments supported by continued infrastructure investments and digital tools like the UgAi app for farmers.
